Description of the genus

Hemiparasitic annuals. Leaves opposite, not lobed, entire. Inflorescence a terminal, bracteate, spike or raceme. Calyx 4-lobed, not inflated. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip laterally flattened, the margins ± recurved; lower lip 3-lobed, with a prominent palate. Stamens 4. Capsule flattened. Seeds 1-4.

Worldwide: 35 species in northern temperate regions.

Britain: 7 taxa.
