CHAENORRHINUM (DC. ex Duby) Rchb.

Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves opposite below and alternate above. Flowers (in ours) solitary in axils of upper leaves.Calyx deeply lobed, the 5 lobes unequal. Corolla: tube with a straight basal spur; limb 2-lipped; upper lip 2-lobed, lower 3-lobed and with a palate not blocking the mouth of the tube. Stamens 4. Capsule with unequal loculi, dehiscing by apical pores. Seeds with longitudinal ribs.

Worldwide: 21 species, mainly in the Mediterranean area.

Britain: 3 taxa.
