Description of the genus

Spiny shrubs; spines green, branched. Leaves 3-foliolate on young plants, reduced to spines or scales on older plants. Fls yellow, solitary in leaf axils. Bracteoles 2, at apex of pedicel. Calyx membranous, yellow, 2-lipped; upper lip minutely 2-toothed; lower minutely 3-toothed. Style somewhat curved. Pod explosively dehiscent, 2-valved, 1-6-seeded.

Worldwide: 20 species in W Europe and N Africa

Britain: 5 taxa.
